Kota Permai Golf & Country Club

(Kuala Lumpur)

Kuala Lumpur

Set within the township of Kota Kemuning, Kota Permai Golf & Country Club has impressed Malaysia golf visitors since its opening in 1998. The 18-hole Kota Permai championship course designed by top international architect, Ross Watson and is one of the best golf courses in Asia.

Bearing testimony to the top status of Kota Permai Golf & Country Club is its impressive portfolio of professional golf championships. From 1998 to 2002 and once again in 2004, Kota Permai hosted the Asian Tour Volvo Masters. Kota Permai was the venue for qualifying event for the World Cup of Golf in 2007. The next year Kota Permai provided a worthy battleground for the co-sanctioned European Tour Malaysian Open.

With success comes recognition and, over the years, Kota Permai has earned numerous awards including Malaysia's Number One Golf Course and Most Beautiful Hole by Golf Malaysia magazine in 2001/2002/2004/2005/2006. And it did not stop there - in Golf Malaysia magazine's readers' poll 2007/2008, Kota Permai voted the country's Best Golf Course. In 2008, Kota Permai was named as the Best Golf & Country Club of the Year in the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards.

The Kota Permai layout is challenging yet fair, with playing options for all levels of golfers.  The design is in harmony with nature and reflected in the wildlife and mature trees found throughout the golf course. The course measures 6,396 meters from the tips and this Kuala Lumpur golf course features a tantalizing mix of straight holes and doglegs, while scenic water hazards and sculptured bunkering add form and challenge to play. To ensure that a round of golf at Kota Permai is always a rewarding experience, the Japanese Zoysia fairways, and undulating Bermuda grass greens are always maintained to the highest standards.

Notable holes include the par-4 second hole. The second is the most beautiful hole on the golf course. With a water hazard stretching along the left of the fairway and snaking to the front of the green, two solid shots are needed to hit the green. Fairway bunkers placed strategically, and the approach landing area on the fairway is blind from the tee box. An added attraction is a large rendition of a squirrel, the course’s logo on the left side of the fairway as you approach the green.

The 408 meters fifteenth par-4 is index two and requires a long and accurate drive as out of bounds and bunkers lurk on the right and a watery grave on the left. The finishing hole is a superb, 517 meter par-5. From the elevated tee box, golfers get by a panoramic view where the magnificent clubhouse provides the backdrop from a distance. Strategically placed bunkers on the fairway and by the green ensure a tough finish to the round.

In 2004, Kota Permai Golf & Country Club completed renovations included greens rebuilding to United States Golf (USGA) specifications, upgrading of tee boxes, adding more vertical railway-sleepers to the bunkers, and expanding the clubhouse. Facilities on offer include two-tier driving range, excellent practice greens for chipping, putting and bunker play, plus a golf academy. Facilities are on par with other world-renowned golf courses.

Kota Permai is a superb golf course and a beautiful place to spend a Malaysia golf holiday. Factor in the proximity to downtown Kula Lumpur and this could well be the best golf course in Malaysia.

Saujana Golf & Country Club, Bunga Raya Course

(Kuala Lumpur)

Kuala Lumpur

Although the Saujana Palm Course hosts the big professional golf tour events, the Bunga Raya Course remains many people's favorite. Whereas the tour players get a slightly longer and (some might say) more forgiving layout to play on, the Bunga Raya is nicknamed the Crocodile because of its powerful bite. It is tighter and more undulating than the Palm, presenting a stern but thoroughly enjoyable test for the higher handicap golfer.

The Ronald Fream layout twice takes you across an old railway cutting and into a former palm oil plantation (although the immense variety of trees, constantly undulating terrain and lush jungle vegetation doesn't make the 'plantation' concept immediately apparent). Half the front-nine and half the back-nine are played across the railway tracks. Throughout, Fream serves up one excellent golf hole after another, making excellent use of the constant elevation changes and a wonderfully natural setting.

The surrounding jungle vegetation, oasis like environment and frequently seen monkeys often steal the show. If you've ever played Pinehurst No.2 in Carolina, you'll have some idea of the short game test that also waits on the Bunga Raya course. The greens are fast and sloping, and if missed your ball can easily go rolling away down a steep run-off, requiring a delicate pitch or chip back onto the putting surface.

Some of the more notable holes include the 3rd, a par-3 over a ravine. It looks easy at first but is actually difficult to play. The green is guarded by bunkers on the left and a strong slope on the right. Moreover, the triple- tiered green has big undulations and is 40 yards deep.

The Saujana Bunga Raya 8th hole is a downhillpar-5 with an almost 90 degree dogleg to the right. Unless you are genuine long hitter, lay up in front of the hazard on the second shot.  The approach shot is 140 yards into a small, undulating, and well protected green.

The 16th is a short par-4. However don’t let the 300 yard length fool you.  The tee shot is a slight dogleg to the left with the green further swung to the left. An accurate long iron or fairway wood tee shot is required on this scoring hole because the fairway is narrow. The green is also small and protected on the front by water.

The Saujana Bunga Raya Course was renovated in 2010 by Ted Parslow and is now better than ever. Service is also excellent with well-trained caddies, golf carts with GPS, and a great restaurant serving both Asian and Western favorites. Distances on the golf course are all in yards, which is unique for a Malaysia golf course.
